GEOGRAPHY:
Tuvalu (formerly the Ellice Islands) is a scattered group of nine small atolls in the western Pacific Ocean extending about 560km (350 miles) from north to south. Nearest neighbours are Fiji (to the south), Kiribati (north) and the Solomon Islands (west). The main island, Funafuti, is also the capital and lies 1920km (1200 miles) north of Suva, Fiji.
Government:
Constitutional monarchy. Gained independence from the UK in 1978. Head of State: HM Queen Elizabeth II, represented locally by Governor-General Faimalaga Luka since 2003. Head of Government: Prime Minister Saufatu Sopoanga since 2002.
Language:
Tuvaluan and English are the main languages.
Religion:
Approximately 98 per cent Protestant.
Time:
GMT + 12.
Electricity:
240 volts AC, 60Hz (Funafuti only).

IDD service is available. Country code: 688. There are no area codes. Tuvalu has recently acquired satellite communications technology and international phone calls can be made from most of the islands.

Overseas telegrams may be sent via the Post Office in Funafuti.
Post
Airmail services to Europe take between 5 and 10 days to arrive, but can be erratic. Tuvalu stamps are among the most sought after in the world.

The Government Broadcasting and Information Division publishes Tuvalu Echoes (in English, on a fortnightly basis).
Radio:

Money
Currency:
Australian and Tuvaluan currency are both in use, but transactions over AUD$1 are always conducted in Australian Dollars. For details of Australian Dollar denominations and exchange rates, see the Australia section.
Tuvaluan Dollar (TV$) = 100 cents. Coins are in denominations of TV$1, and 500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5 cents.
Credit & debit cards:
Credit cards are not accepted, but MasterCard may be used at the National Bank of Tuvalu for cash advances.
Travellers cheques:
Australian Dollars are recommended.
Currency restrictions:
There are no restrictions on the import and export of foreign or local currency.

Food & drink:
All water is stored in tanks and supply is limited so visitors are advised to use water sparingly and take local advice.
Other risks:
Hepatitis A occurs; hepatitis B is endemic. Dengue fever and filariasis are also present. There is a threat of tuberculosis. Poisonous fish and sea snakes can be a potential hazard to bathers.
Health care:
Visitors are advised to bring antiseptic cream as cuts are inclined to turn septic, but apart from this precaution there are no serious health risks. The mosquitoes are non-malarial, but the visitor may nevertheless wish to take protective measures. There are no reciprocal agreements with the UK or USA and travellers are recommended to take out full medical insurance before departure.

Climate
The climate is humid and hot with a mean annual temperature of 30C (86F) and comparatively little seasonal variation. March to October tends to be cooler and more pleasant, whilst some discomfort may be experienced during the wet season from November to February.

Lightweight for summer, rainwear for the wet season.

Valid passport required by all.
VISAS:
Required by all except the following:
(a) nationals listed in the chart above;
(b) nationals of Commonwealth countries (except nationals of Brunei, Cameroon, Mozambique, Namibia, St Kitts & Nevis and South Africa, who do require a visa);
(c) nationals of Iceland, Liechtenstein, San Marino, Switzerland, Tunisia, Turkey and Uruguay;
(d) 1. nationals of the USA (only if the passport is issued by the Marshall Islands);
(e) transit passengers continuing their journey on the same or first connecting aircraft within 24 hours provided holding required travel documents for onward destination and not leaving the airport transit lounge.
Note: Entry permits are issued on arrival providing nationals can provide a valid passport, sufficient funds, proof of accommodation and a return/onward ticket.
Types of visa and cost:
Visitor and work permits issued free of charge.
Validity:
Visitors are normally permitted to remain in Tuvalu for up to 1 month, after meeting entry requirements; their visit may then be extended for a maximum of 3 months at a cost of £10.

British Consulates, Tuvalu representatives abroad or the Principal Immigration Officer, Office of the Chief of Police, Funafuti, Tuvalu.
